AFAR, the National Institute of Aging of the NIH, and PBS Next Avenue presented a free webinar, Stronger, Longer: Muscle Mass and Aging. The one-hour webinar shared the latest research on sarcopenia and tips for what you can do to sustain muscle as you grow older.
First, AFAR expert Nathan LeBrasseur, PhD(Director of the Healthy Aging and Independent Living Program at the Robert and Arlene Kogod Center on Aging, and Associate professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester) presented a basic overview on sarcopenia and highlight his research to develop interventions to harness a skeletal protein, myostatin, that may increase muscle mass and bolster resilience.
Next, Lyndon Joseph, PhD (Exercise Physiologist with the Division of Geriatrics and Clinical Gerontology of the NIA) shared research-backed lifestyle tips to sustain muscle while preventing injuries.
