Live Longer, Live Well

Start Time: October 27, 2014

On Monday, October 27 at the House of Lords in London, AFAR co-hosted a special event to engage politicians and scientists in a discussion on how research into the biology of aging can help make a healthy old age a reality.

The event, Live Longer, Live Well, was co-hosted by the British Society for Research on Ageing (BSRA) and the Glenn Foundation for Medical Research.

James L. Kirkland, MD, PhD, of the Mayo Clinic and AFAR 2012 Glenn/AFAR Breakthroughs in Gerontology (BIG) grantee; Mark Collins, AFAR Board Member and President of the Glenn Foundation for Medical Research; and Richard Faragher of the British Society for Research on Aging.

“AFAR is honored to have been invited to present at such a prestigious venue with our respected peers, and we are inspired by this recognition of the value of research in the biology of aging,” said Stephanie Lederman, AFAR Executive Director. “We are excited to continue this momentum stateside.”

The event also premiered an animation by information designer David McCandless, sponsored by the Glenn Foundation for Medical Research.

Through clever illustrations and a compelling narrative, the animation explains how a “Better World for Older People is a Better World for Everyone” while debunking myths on aging and posing the economic and social benefits of improved healthspan—the amount of time we are in optimal health.

The clip is made available open access to our colleagues, constituents, and supporters to help rally for more support for aging research. View here.

AFAR and the Glenn Foundation for Medical Research plan to distribute the data visualizations and engage municipal, philanthropic, and scientific leaders through related events in 2015.
