Bobby Darrin once sang, “If I could talk with the animals…”

Today, scientists are also pondering: If we could talk with the animals, what would they tell us about living longer?

Humans have dramatically increased their lifespan—but only have seen a limited increase in healthspan. By contrast, from thousand-year-old tubeworms to 400-year-old sharks, several species live with extraordinary longevity and vitality.

Does the key to their long lives lie their genetics? Environment influences? Social habits? Eating and sleep patterns? Any or all of these factors? And even more so: how do these same factors influence human aging?

In a conversation-style webinar, Prevention’s Editor in Chief Sarah Smith will be joined by AFAR Senior Scientific Director Steven N. Austad, PhD, to discuss his latest book, Methuselah's Zoo: What Nature Can Teach Us About Living Healthier, Longer Lives (2022, Penguin Random House/ MIT Press).

A globally recognized leader in aging research, Steven N. Austad, PhD, is the Protective Life Endowed Chair in Healthy Aging Research, a Distinguished Professor, and Chair of the Department of Biology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He is also the founding director of UAB’s Nathan Shock Center of Excellence in the Basic Biology of Aging and co-director of the UAB Integrative Center for Aging Research. He also serves as co-principal investigator of the National Institute on Aging’s Nathan Shock Centers Coordinating Center.

Dr. Austad’s multiple-award-winning research uses a variety of traditional and nontraditional animal species, employing both laboratory and field studies, to seek to discover underlying causes of aging with a long-term goal of developing interventions that slow the age-related decay in human health.

His previous book, Why We Age (1997, 1999), has been translated into eight languages.
