There’s no shortage of healthy eating “gurus” and weight-loss programs vying for your attention. But what does the science actually say about food, this crucial component of staying well as you age? Research into the body’s natural rhythm and metabolic processes reveals strategies for maintaining healthy weight today in order to extend your years of health tomorrow.

For the latest talk in our Live Better Longer series, AFAR and Prevention have invited two scientific experts to unpack two trending topics: time-restricted eating and the ketogenic diet. We’ll explore what they are and whether they’ll work for your goals.

In Conversation:

John Newman

John Newman, MD, PhD, a geriatrician and basic science researcher who has published widely in medical journals on the Ketogenic Diet. At the Buck Institute, the Newman lab focuses on an emerging signaling metabolite—the ketone body that allows the body’s cells to utilize fats for fuel—and the role it may have in responding to stressors and regulating healthspan. Dr. Newman is a 2014 AFAR Beeson Scholar.

Satchin Panda

Satchin Panda, PhD, a leading expert in the field of circadian rhythm research and author of the bestselling book, The Circadian Code: Lose Weight, Supercharge Your Energy and Sleep Well Every Night. At the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, the Panda Lab is exploring the potential impact of “time-restricted eating” on supporting the immune system and treating overeating disorders, diabetes, obesity. Dr. Panda is a 2014 AFAR Julie Martin Mid-Career Award in Aging Research recipient.

Sarah Smith

Sarah Smith, Editor-in-Chief, Prevention

Among the topics explored:

  • How does the ketogenic or “keto” diet work on a molecular level?
  • Why do dietary habits influence our body’s clocks or circadian rhythm?
  • What is the difference between time-restricted eating and intermittent fasting?
  • How may ketogenic diets and time-restricted eating delay age-related ailments?

Join us for this informal but informative conversation and the chance to ask leading experts your questions about healthy eating for healthy aging.
