Determine if genetic and pharmacologic proteasome manipulation can prevent age-related cognitive deficits in mice and flies

Healthy aging is accompanied by a decline in cognitive faculties as well as a decline of the proteasome system. The proteasome system is a key driver of degradation of unneeded or damaged proteins. In preliminary studies, the  Pickering lab have found that improving the proteasome system with novel genetic tools can slow or prevent cognitive decline in a fly model. In the proposed study, Dr. Andrew Pickering will investigate whether this improvement from augmentation of the proteasome system can be replicated in mammals. They will also investigate whether novel compounds that active proteasome function could delay cognitive deficits, which could lead to future interventions.
