AFAR Medical Officer Richard Besdine, MD, discusses geriatric care and practice in a new blog post featured on the health section of The Huffington Post. His article emphasizes the important role that geriatric medicine plays not only in patient care on the individual level, but also in reducing health care costs systemwide. He says that improving the science, research and training of medical professionals in geriatrics is a keystone in this idea of patient care and cost reduction. Through AFAR's Medical Student Training in Aging Research (MSTAR) program, medical students gain exposure to the field through research and practice. This focus on bringing medical students into the field of geriatrics is a direct response to the increasing need of aging baby boomers today. As Dr. Besdine explains, "Encouraging more medical students to pursue geriatrics research careers, supporting that research, and translating it promptly into practice for the benefit of patients everywhere must be among our highest funding priorities."
