Grantees in the News: Reisa Sperling and Scott Turner Use New Image Technology in Groundbreaking Study

On May 25, 2015, ABC News reported on a novel technique utilized by 2003 Beeson Scholar, Dr. Reisa Sperling in her Anti-Amyloid Treatment in Asymptomatic Alzheimer’s (A4) Study to determine whether an experimental drug prevents Alzheimer’s in individuals who are in good health but at high risk of the disease.

By using brain-scanning technology, Dr. Sperling and her team have been able to identify Alzheimer’s disease’s two main hallmarks--plaque buildup and tangles in the tau protein--in these individuals. The scans will help researchers determine the effectiveness of the experimental drug.

1998 Beeson Scholar, Dr. R. Scott Turner was also cited in the article as one of the researchers running a testing facility for the A4 trial.

This story also appeared in the Huffington Post.

Reisa Sperling, MD, M.M.Sc., is the Director of the Center for Alzheimer's Research and Treatment & Co-Director, Neuroimaging Core at the Massachusetts Alzheimer's Disease Research Center and a Professor of Neurology, Harvard Medical School.

R. Scott Turner, MD, PhD, is a Professor of Neurology at Georgetown University.
