Grantees in the News: Eric Coleman, MD, MPH, Awarded MacArthur Fellowship
Eric Coleman, MD, MPH, was awarded an unrestricted “genius” fellowship award by the Charles D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation on October 2. Dr. Coleman is a geriatrician who studies care transitions and aims to find ways to reduce the number of unnecessary hospital readmissions. A phenomenon that affects many older adults, avoidable readmissions are costly and dangerous both to patients and the health care system. The Care Transitions Intervention Dr. Coleman has developed, The New York Times reported, reduces the chance of readmission up to 50% and is already being implemented across the country. The MacArthur Fellowship aims to support Dr. Coleman in his continued innovative work. Dr. Coleman is the recipient of a 2001 Paul B. Beeson Career Development Award in Aging Research and a professor of medicine and Head of the division of Health Care Policy and Research at the University of Colorado at Denver.
