Grantee in the News: Janey Peterson launches New App for Improved Patient Care
On August 31st, 2016 Beeson Scholar Janey Peterson, MA, MS, RN, EdD, published an article on OncLive about a new mobile app that could help transform postoperative patient monitoring.
Thanks to a $450,000 grant from the Damon Runyon Foundation, Dr. Peterson and her team will be performing a randomized trial for patients with gastrointestinal cancer using the app to document their health and recovery in the perioperative period. Patients download the app to their smartphone or tablet and are given a wearable fitness tracking device to capture other metrics. The app allows patients to more conveniently and frequently share data with their doctor. The team is hopeful that the app will help to reduce preventable postsurgical readmission rates by at least 5% to 10%.
Janey Peterson, MA, MS, RN, EdD, is Associate Professor of Clinical Epidemiology in Medicine, Integrative Medicine and Cardiothoracic Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College.
