2012 ANNUAL AWARDS DINNERAFAR’s 2012 Annual Awards Dinner and the symposium “Innovation and the Future of Healthy Aging” were cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy. The events were scheduled to take place October 29 in New York City, which was hit hard by the storm. Both events have been rescheduled for April 15, 2013. The honorees include Brian Daniels, MD, senior vice president of Global Development and Medical Affairs at Bristol-Myers Squibb; and Michael Hodin, adjunct senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations and executive director of the Global Coalition on Aging. 2011 ANNUAL DINNER
On Tuesday, October 4, AFAR celebrated thirty years of aging research at a dinner with board members, grantees, and supporters. We were joined by three AFAR honorees, whose distinguished achievements in support of public health and the biology of aging we commend. Mrs. Nancy Kissinger was recognized for her role as co-founder of the Women & Science Initiative at the Rockefeller University.
Mehmood Khan, MD, CEO of PepsiCo’s Global Nutrition Group, was honored for his work to promote health through good nutrition worldwide.
AFAR also celebrated the career of aging research pioneer Rose Dobrof, DSW, founding director of the Brookdale Center on Aging, Hunter College. Two scientific awardees, Steven N. Austad, PhD, and Matthew R. Kaeberlein, PhD, were honored for their achievements in aging research.

AFAR also paid special tribute to the accomplishments of women in science and aging research. Leonard D. Schaeffer Executive Officer of the Institute of Medicine and geriatrician, Judith Salerno, MD, MS, delivered remarks on the obstacles facing female investigators, sharing her insights about the universality of the challenges of work/life balance.
