On July 16th, AFAR held a special cocktail reception for trust and estate attorneys and interested individuals, hosted by Joan Murtagh Frankel, J.D., Partner at Cahill Gordon and Reindel LLP and a member of AFAR's Executive Committee.
To frame how age-related conditions like dementia have financial, social, and emotional impact on individuals and their caregivers, the event featured a special presentation on “The Myth of Senility” Dr. Norman Relkin. Dr. Relkin is an Associate Professor of Neurology and Neuroscience at the Weil Cornell Medical College and Founding Director of its Memory Disorders Program, and a member of AFAR's Board of Directors.
Dr. Relkin shared insights on some special issues which face vulnerable older clients, ranging from elder abuse and negligence to competency and guardianship and provided tips on how professionals can identify clients whom may be displaying symptoms of dementia.
As the needs of aging adults evolve, the responses of professionals can have significant implications for the welfare of the individual client and his or her family. For more information on how to identify signs of Alzheimer’s disease in clients or loved ones visit AFAR's Infoaging resource.
